Enovio Radial: A Smart, Solar-Powered, Data-Collecting Litter Bin

The inspiration for the Radial bin came from a desire to create a product that goes beyond its basic function. Markowicz and his team wanted to design a product that offers additional opportunities, hence the bin is equipped with an air quality sensor. The minimalist design, inspired by a simple letterbox, encourages the use of the product.

What sets the Enovio Radial apart is its smart features powered by a photovoltaic panel. This solar-powered bin collects data and transfers it to city services, providing valuable information about bin usage and air quality. The built-in 25-watt photovoltaic panel powers the air quality sensor, fill sensor, and advertisement lighting, making the bin fully autonomous.

The Radial bin is made of powder-coated steel and aluminum, ensuring durability and longevity. All additional elements are easily removable for quick servicing and replacement of components. The photovoltaic panel is not an integral part, meaning all components can be recycled after the product's lifespan, underlining the design's commitment to sustainability.

The design process, which took place in Warsaw, began in February 2019 and was completed in January 2020. The main challenge was to create an intelligent energy management system that would allow a relatively small solar panel to power several functions simultaneously. This required the development of a system that would activate these functions only when needed.

The Enovio Radial Smart Bin is a testament to the potential of design to transform urban spaces. It is a product that not only fulfills its basic function but also contributes to the city's data collection and sustainability efforts. Its award-winning design, which received the Golden A' Street and City Furniture Design Award in 2020, is proof of its exceptional quality and innovative approach.
